Exploring Metaphor and Volta in Sand Tray and PlayTherapy

Live Webinar

If toys are a child’s words, working in sandtrays can be described as a child’s poetry.

Volta refers to a shift–in tone, theme, meaning, perspective, etc.--that occurs in a poem. After a volta, something has changed. The same phenomenon occurs during sand tray work. There are moments–a new miniature, a change in position, a phrase uttered nonchalantly, a feeling–that changes the meaning of a sand tray. Sometimes, the change is apparent in the moment and at other times it is apparent in the following sand tray. In this play therapy workshop,

Dr. Emily Keller, LPCC, RPT-S, will lead participants through an exploration of metaphor, poetry, sand tray, and the moment that everything changes. This workshop highlights the power of play therapy to facilitate communication, especially that of the subconscious. As play therapists, sometimes we feel the shifts that occur in sand tray. This workshop attempts to use the structure of poetry to help elucidate the process.

Dr. Keller will structure the workshop in three parts: didactic, experiential, and case studies. Participants will gain insight into the sometimes subtle and sometimes abrupt moments of change that can occur during sand tray work both with children and with adults.Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the communicative power of sand tray in play therapy
  2. Give three examples of meaningful shifts that occur in sand trays created during play therapy
  3. Define metaphor and volta in the context of sand tray play therapy
