The Therapeutic Power of Play: An Introduction to Play Therapy

This 6-hour contact play therapy training event is designed to cultivate your excitement about the power of using play therapy with children while also offering a solid introduction to the field.

Join Susan Kelsey, LMFT, RPT-S and Emily Keller, PhD, LPCC, RPT-s for an engaging hands-on introduction to the therapeutic power of play therapy in working with children and teens. This experiential workshop will provide an introduction to play therapy, a powerful, evidence-based, and child-friendly approach to the treatment of children and adolescents. This introductory workshop is appropriate for licensed and pre-licensed therapists who would like to begin treating children and teens or become more proficient in treating this population.

Learning Objectives

After the workshop participants will be able to: 

  1. Define play therapy
  2. List several significant figures in the history of play therapy
  3. Discuss the difference between treating children and adults
  4. Identify Virginia Axline’s 8 basic principles for using play with children in therapy
  5. Describe Garry Landreth’s 10 treatment objectives using non-directive play therapy

  • 10:30-10:45 Break (no CE’s will be awarded for this time)
  • 10:45-12:15 Messages in children’s play, 8 basic principles in play therapy, 10 treatment objectives
  • 12:15-12:45 Lunch (no CE’s will be awarded for this time)
  • 12:45:-2:15 Experiential exercises
  • 2:15-2:30 Break (no CE’s will be awarded for this time)
  • 2:30-4 Case Studies and Q&A

About the Speakers:

  • Susan Kelsey, MFT, RPT-S is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor specializing in play therapy for children from toddlers to teens. She has been in practice for over 20 years specializing in the treatment of children and adolescents using play therapy as her treatment of choice. Susan presents workshops nationally and internationally and is recognized by her peers as an expert on the treatment of children and adolescents.
  • Emily Keller, PhD, LPCC, RPT-S is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor who is passionate about applying the therapeutic power of play therapy to help children, teens, and families heal and grow.

Refund/Cancellation Policy: 

You may cancel for a full refund up to 15 days in advance of the ent or a 50% refund between 5 and 15 days in advance of the event. No refunds for cancellations within 5 days of the event or for no-shows or failure to attend due to emergencies. Unused funds cannot be applied to future workshops.
